Au-pair in Italy

Italy has ratified the European au-pair agreement. But the experience shows that Italian au-pair program has some differences in European prescriptions. It is because of the climate of the south of Italy and specifics of everyday tempo.  In spite of the fact that for many young people it is hard to become an au-pair in Italy, it is still possible.

Requirements for the au-pairs‘ stay in Austria:

- Single and without children
- Healthy
- Age: between 18 and 30 years old
- Stay period is 6-12 months
- Au-pairs are taxed, the Italian tax number (Codice fiscale) must be presented in the responsible Italian inland revenue.
- Education: high school or college
- Experience in child care and household is preferable
- Driving license is also preferable
- Au-pairs pay for their journey to the country and back. Also, they pay for a language school.
-Language knowledge: Basic knowledge of Italian or English language.

Conditions for au-pairs in a host family:

- Own room and support

- Vocation: one week of vocation after six months of work
- Use of a family's car by an au-pair is up to the host family.

-Participation at the language courses
-Babysitting is preferable, but by agreement with the family
-Termination period takes maximum one week

Entry and stay formalities:

EU citizens do not need any visa. They can enter with a valid ID or passport. After the entry within 3 days an au-pair should register at the authorized registration department (Questura centrale, Commissariato or Stazione di Carabiniere). If the au-pair's stay period is more than 3 months she should apply for the residence permit (Permesso di Soggiorno).

Non EU citizens need a short-term visa for the stay period less than 3 months. For the longer stay period, before the entry you need to apply for the visa (visto nazionale di lunga durata per motivi di lavoro subordinato) at the embassy located in your native country. For the application the au-pair should have a valid international passport, work permit, and an Italian host family's loyalty certificate. The work permit (autorizzazione al lavoro) is applied at the labour office of the region (Ufficio Provinciale del Lavoro) by the family. After having the work permit, at the request of the host family the loyalty certificate can be given by the authorized prefecture of the province (Nulla Osta). The au-pair should enter the country within 6 months after the receiving of the work permit. After the entry the au-pair must register by the authorized registration department. Within 6-8 weeks together with the host family the au-pair should apply for the residence permit.  For this the au-pair needs to have the work permit (autorizzazione al lavoro) and loyalty certificate (Nulla Osta). The confirmation of the valid Italian medical insurance is required for the application.
Citizens of New Zealand, Australia and Canada can also enter with the Working Holiday visa. More information about it is at the authorized Italian embassy of your country.

Specifics:

- The majority of the host families which take an au-pair spend the whole summer in their summer cottage by the sea or in the mountains.
-  Often there are a lot of differences in regulations of the European au-pair agreement!
-   In the family there should be at least 1 child, who is younger than 18 years old and really lives in the family. This is also valid for single parents. For the families which live in Italy for a long time, but do not have Italian citizenship there is also a possibility to have an au-pair.
