Au-pair
in Luxemburg
Luxemburg ratified the „European agreement about the au-pair employment "
in 1990. But since 2003 the au-pair work is not approved by the labour
law any more. Those who want to have an au-pair should register her as a
homemaker. It means that a lot of au-pairs work demiofficially in Luxembourg. There
is no official au-pair status in the country.
Requirements for the au-pairs‘ stay in Luxemburg:
- Single and without children
- Age: from 18 to 27 years old
- Education: high school or college
- Work time is up to 30 hours per week and 2-3 times of babysitting
in the evenings are expected
- Language knowledge: according to the law basic knowledge of
German of French
- Experience in child care and household, discharges are preferable
- Au-pair pays his/her journey
- Au-pair pays for the language courses
- A valid passport or ID. The validity of ID should not exceed the
duration of stay period for about 3 months.
- Doctors certificate
- Non-conviction certificate
- Driving license is always preferable
Conditions
for the au-pair in the family:
- Own room and support
- Pocket money: 260 euro per month, or by agreement
- The monthly ticket for the public transport is by agreement
- Free days: 11/2 days per week
- Vocation: according to the law one week of paid vocation in a half year
of work
- A family car can be used
- Au-pairs are taxed. Regarding the taxes, au-pairs are automatically
socially insured after the regiatration.
Entry and stay formalities:
- Au-pairs from EU can enter the country with a valid passport.
- Au-pairs who are not from EU countries need visa and work permit. We
recomend you to ask more information about relevant au-pair regulations at the
embessy located in your native country.
Specifics:
- After Malta Luxembourg is the second-smallest country in the EU. The total
area of the country is 2.586 km ².
- French is spoken in the authorities, the parliament and courts. The
newspapers are mostly in German.
