Au-pair in New Zealand

As in Australia there is no official au-pair program in New Zealand. However, it is possible to work as an au-pair during 12 months by Working Holiday Scheme-Visa (WHS). A host family cannot be changed after 6 months of stay (as it is in Australia). Host families can be from big cities (Auckland, Willington, Christchurch and Queenstown) as well as from the country.

What attracts an au-pair in New Zealand except the improvement of English language?

New Zealand has amazing nature and original agricultural variety.

Sandy beaches, lakes, close rainforest, snowy mountaintops, impressive geysers and volcanoes make the island attractive for many young people in the world.

The modern metropolis with its culture, places of interest, its international atmosphere attract a lot. New Zealand is a dream of many natural lovers and world discoverers.

Requirements for the au-pairs‘  stay in New Zealand:

- Age: between 18 and 30 years old
- Single and without children
- Good knowledge of English
- Education: high school or college
- Driving license is always preferable
- A perfect non-conviction certificate
- Experience in child care and household, references
- 6-12 months of au-pair work. After 6 or 9 months of stay you can use the rest of your stay period for travelling, which is popular among au-pairs in New Zealand.

Conditions for au-pairs in the host family:

- Free accommodation and support
- Pocket money: from 100 to 200 NZD per week
- Work time is from 25 to 40 hours per week
- Help about the house is expected
- Medical, guarantee and accident insurances should be executed in the native country.  Some organizations specialize in it. In the state health system only British and Australian citizens are mentioned.
- Language school: Sometimes host families pay for au-pair's language courses. Only in big cities there is a big choice of language schools.
- Vocation: according to the law and after agreement with a host family one week of paid vocation in a half year of stay is provided.

Entry and stay formalities:

The application for „Working Holiday Scheme-Visa" (WHS) should be made by a member country (e.g., Germany) before entry to New Zealand. It should be the first Working Holiday applicant. Participation in Working Holiday program in New Zealand is not possible for the second time - and it does not matter what kind of activity you choose either Live-in-Caregiver, Working Holiday program, au-pair program, or stoop labour assistant. The visa needed for all these programs is Working-Holiday Visa.

For the application a candidate needs a valid passport, which is valid 3 more months after leaving New Zealand. The medical certificate about good health is required (including PPD Testing). Confirmation of financial independence (approx. 2200 euro in the manner of bank statements, a pass sheet, and a credit card), and the return ticket are required. For German citizens the application for Working Holiday visa is possible on-line at the embassy of New Zealand. In this case, confirmation about nomination to the state institution is necessary, e.g., to the language schools of CRICOS or universities.
