Facilities for an au-pair in a host family:
• Own room and full supporting • Pocket money: 200-250 euro per month • Ticket for the public transport to the language school and back is by arrangement • Vocation: according to the law one week of paid vacation after 6 months stay period, and two weeks during 12 months stay period • Language school is not a must, but the host family should give free time for visiting language courses. The au-pair pays for the courses. By arrangement the family can partially pay for the au-pair's courses. • Often the au-pair can use a family's car • In Portugal host families should not execute medical and accident insurance for their au-pairs. As an employee of EU-countries, the au-pair has right to free medical care. For this you should receive the form E111 in a clinic of your home country, then give it to the health authorities in Portugal and renew it every three months. Only through this form the acute care can be given. Additional insurance is also reasonable.
Stay and entry conditions
• EU-citizens are allowed to entry only with a valid ID or the foreign passport. The validity of ID should be at least three months longer than the stay period. EU citizens, who stay in Portugal more than three months, need to have residence permit „permissao de permanência". For starting to work, work permit „autorizacao de tabalho" is also needed. For the work permit the contract (Contrato de trabalho do servico domestico) between an au-pair and a host family should be executed. Then you should bring the contract to the local police office in Portugal, and apply for the residence permit.
• Non EU-citizens need the au-pair visa.
